If at first you don't succeed.....

According to legend, Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland (1306-1329) was inspired to eventual victory over the English after observing the work of a spider spinning its web. As Bruce took refuge in a cave he watched as the spider finally succeeded at the eighth attempt, and resolved to persevere against the English, achieving a series of decisive victories which would ensure Scottish independence.
