The Spider Women of Skuon, Cambodia
SkuonComing down the Mekong River from Laos into Cambodia, I passed through a town called Skuon where one of the local delicacies is large fried black spiders. It seems the practice of eating spiders began during the hey day of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime whose ill considered agricultural reforms led to extreme food scarcities. Always looking to broaden my gastronomic horizons I tried a couple of the critters, though they weren't anything to write home about. The taste could be described as vaguely resembling crab or chicken though it really tasted more of whatever it had been fried with. Your basic bush tucker!
